How much red meat is recommended in a healthy diet?
The Australian Dietary Guidelines recommend eating 65g of lean, cooked red meat a day, or 455g a week.
This is equivalent to eating red meat three to four times a week in a variety of healthy, balanced meals.
The Australian Dietary Guidelines' red meat recommendation refers to unprocessed beef, lamb, pork, kangaroo and game meat. It does not include meat products categorised as ‘discretionary foods’ like sausages (unless lean and reduced sodium), processed meats such as ham and bacon and commercial products such as hamburgers.
