How can red meat production be sustainable?
Australia’s red meat and livestock industry has a target to be carbon neutral by 2030.
Pathways outlined in the industry’s Carbon Neutral by 2030 Roadmap include:
Reducing emissions from the production system by establishing livestock feeds such as legumes and supplementing livestock diets with additives such as red algae; methane capture from waste management processes and its reuse as an energy source; genetics and grazing management practices; and vegetation management.
Removing emissions from the atmosphere by planting trees, legumes and pastures and introducing dung beetles as part of the grazing management system to improve carbon storage and increase nutrient cycling from manure into the soil.
